Press Release: Statement on debate question on abortion

Columbus — In response to gubernatorial debate discussion of abortion in Ohio, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland said:

“Tonight, Rich Cordray was asked about the abortion bans being considered by the Republican majority in the Ohio legislature. Rich Cordray and Betty Sutton understand how critical it is to protect abortion access for Ohioans, and that is why he has promised to veto the those bills.

“Mike DeWine has been in office fighting abortion access from nearly the moment Roe v. Wade was decided. He has said multiple times that he would sign a six-week abortion ban, with no exceptions even for rape or incest survivors. With a Trump-packed US Supreme Court, DeWine could criminalize abortion in our state.

“DeWine was also asked about his stance on elements of the Affordable Care Act, such as pre-existing conditions and Medicaid expansion. DeWine is so out of touch with the healthcare needs of Ohioans that he wants to make dramatic cuts to Medicaid coverage and he opposes the contraception coverage mandate.

“Whether you look at Medicaid coverage or accessing abortion clinics, the answer is clear: Mike DeWine is unfit to lead Ohio. I urge voters to elect Cordray/Sutton on November 6.”
